When i go to send a text, it puts a +1 in front of the number.?

On my Verizon Samsung Continuum Smart Phone, I will go to text one of my contacts, and it automatically puts a +1 in front of the number. Its not like that in my contacts. Verizon doesnt even know how to fix it. What do I do?
