A full grown 7-8ft captive alligator gar will need a swimming pool sized enclosure. Babies will feed on small appropriate sized native fresh water fish. Adults feed on larger fish, frogs, snakes and even small birds. It is not recommended to keep an alligator gar as a pet. They are apex predators in their own right and do not fair very well in captivity. These prehistoric looking fish can deliver a pretty good bite once they attain larger proportions. There are records of alligator gars reaching lengths up to 12ft.
